====== Orientation Day 2007 ====== The 2007 orientation wasn't actually planned on the wiki, but I ([[:wiki:user:peterwilliams]]) thought I'd preserve some information about it on the Wiki. Especially since it looks like the 2008 Launch Day will take a slightly different shape. From an email: "The schedule is as follows: * 10am - Logistical Meeting - Lounge - Your attendence is optional here * Intro to the department and to the staff * Lots of housekeeping (keys, computer accounts, etc) * Other useful info for first-years (residency, health insurance, etc) * 11am - Discussion of Classes - Lounge - Your attendence here would be good * Panel with James, Eugene, Eliot, Bower * How to sign up for classes * What classes are offered this semester * What to expect from grad classes & how to divide your time in the semester * How to plan for the first two years * 12pm - Lunch (paid!) - Faculty Club - Your attendence here is very important * Debrief with your mentee about classes (especially if Eugene scared them) * Answer any questions the mentees have from the morning * Get to know your mentee and just chill * 1pm - 5pm - Scavenger Hunt - You don't have to do a thing * First-years wander around campus & Campbell meeting people and getting first-year things done (pick up Cal card, RSF membership, etc) * 5pm - Fun Meeting - Lounge - Your attendence here is optional * Grads come in and discuss various extracurricular activities that they would like to recruit first-years to do * General chill time * 6pm - BBQ - Between Birge & LeConte - Your attendence here would be good * Free food! "There are also a few social events, to make the first-years' first few days especially enjoyable, and we hope that you will be able to attend these as well to be part of the welcoming: * Wed Eve - post-orientation go-to-a-bar event, details decided at the BBQ * Fri Eve - small hang-out at Linda's house, chance for the first years to relax after the horrible GSI orientation day * Sat Eve - party at Nicholas' house"
